What do restaurants do with incorrect credit bill totals?

This is simply out of curiousity.

I am wondering what to restaurants do with incorrect credit bill totals? For example, if I filled out a tip saying I'm giving $5 as tip, but end up only adding $4 to the total amount, what do they take? What if I were to accidentally write $100 in the tip amount, but only add $10? Something like that. Anyone work in a restaurant know what you'd do? :] Thanks. What do restaurants do with incorrect credit bill totals?
In every restaurant I've worked at, the final bill total we charge is exactly what the customer fills in on the 'Total' line. That is, if a customer writes a $5 tip but but only $4 is added to the total amount, we charge the amount with the $4 tip. It can be unfortunate for a server at times, but we are not allowed to assume the customer meant to tip us more and calculated incorrectly.

If you work in a restaurant long enough, you will definitely see cheapos use this to their advantage, especially on higher bill totals. The bill will be $200, they will write out a $40 tip, and amazingly the final total they will calculate to be $210. Sad . .What do restaurants do with incorrect credit bill totals?
It depends. For instance, in the first one (say $5 but add $4) I (and I mean at the place that I work) would assume that you had meant to give $5 and hadn't done the math correctly.

For the second one, we would assume oppositely. We would assume that you hadn't been paying attention to the second 0 and had only meant a $10 tip.

Kinda common sense, kinda educated guesses.
