What type of mashed potatoes are the trend in restaurants in your area: instant from box or home made type?

We only have 2 restaurants, out of at least 30, serving the home made type. One is a Diner and the other is a local Mom and Pop. I don't like paying a lot of money anywhere-especially the fancier places, for instant mashed potatoes. It's getting the same with gravy and other items too. What fun is eating out when the food is not fresh prepared? What type of mashed potatoes are the trend in restaurants in your area: instant from box or home made type?
I wouldn't set foot in a restaurant that served instant mashed potatoes. God knows what other crap they would serve their customers.
In restaurants real potatoes are better and worth the money but very small diners I'm sure use instant onesWhat type of mashed potatoes are the trend in restaurants in your area: instant from box or home made type?
Even though they are quicker if someone is paying for a meal they should be making thier own from scratch. Then even have some that come pre-mashed and frozen so all you have to do is heat them. You can get lumpy or plain.

And as far as gravy, I also agree. Once again even though the packet or jarred gravies are a great convenience gravy is not that hard to make and is quick to make also. But you would be surprised how many people don't know how to make gravy, or make it right.

So yes it is upsetting, so you may just have to order a baked potato or fries instead. Bummer I know since mashed and gravy is one of my favorite sides.
95% to 98% of the restaurants in the US that serve mashed potatoes on their menu use instant mashed potato flakes for mashed potatoes. The reason is food and labor cost compared to fresh. many cooks that prepare and cook your food are not very skilled and do not want to learn or can not make good fresh mashers. the spuds must be cooked properly first and foremost and if they are not done correctly then you might as well start over. Instant potatoes are fool proof. add hot water to the potato flakes until they are the consistency you like. add a few seasonings, maybe milk and margarine and serve.

It all comes down to the cost and money.
ewwww.... boxed potatoes are disgusting! you should move to a city with better restaurants! try portland or san fran :)
