I'm going on a People to People trip for 19 days to Italy, Sicily, and Greece. The cost is $7500 and I'm supposed to raise this money on my own. %26gt;.%26lt; I wanna ask some italian restaurants to help sponsor my trip but I have no idea how to even begin to ask. And I'm also having trouble with asking for donations in general. I don't want to be too straightforward in my inquiry. Any suggestions on what to do?How do I ask for restaurants to sponsor my trip?
You must be very direct. You need a cover letter which explains why you are participating in this program, is it about your education, relegion, social justice or ??? Write your self a script and practice it with some other people (role play) until you are comfortable telling your story but keep it brief. Have a donation contract to give to the owner or manager so he/she has something to document who they gave money to and why. Know all you can about the organization, its tax status etc because they won't give you hundreds of dollars based on your good looks and Italian heritage unless they are your uncles. When you are ready you call the restaurant early in the day and ask for a 10 minute appointment with the owner or manager at their convenience. You show up on time, dressed properly and with all your paper work in order. You thank them for their time even if they don't give you money, you than them profusely if they give you money and you write them another thank you when you get home. You also keep a journal of your trip and you send them another letter with the highlights of your trip based on what you told them you wanted to get out of it when you return home.
Assuming you're of legal age: you should probably try working at restaurants as a waiter or dishwasher rather than asking for donations/sponsors.
Don't mean to discourage you, but unless they know you they probably are not going to want to provide charitable donations for something like this. How do I ask for restaurants to sponsor my trip?
Forget sponsorship. Few people are going to give money to send someone else on a trip. It would take a waiter at one of those places to work 18 weeks, full time, at minimum wage, to make $7500.
You need to raise your own cash first, then try to get funds to cover the difference between what you have and what you need. A job would be a more practical idea.
p.s. $7500/19 days is $395 per day.
If you end up looking for other ideas to raise money then make sure you check out the "Pay Your Way" section on People to People's website - http://p2ppayyourway.com/. It's got that online tool PeerBacker which would help you and your parents use your social networks to do a fundraising campaign online. And how about this girl who raised $2,000 through a yard sale?! http://peopletopeopleblogs.com/2011/10/b鈥?/a>
People donate to charities and worthy causes, not for personal use. It's also illegal for you to solicit donations. Only a registered non profit organization with a tax exempt id number can legally ask for donations.
Don't ask.
The business owner gets NOTHING for giving you money. This is neither advertising, nor a charitable donation. Unless the restaurant owner is your father or uncle, don't bother.
